I have an additional Netgear N router that I want to connect to my network and use it as a wifi extender while also being able to run ethernet cables from the ports to have wired connections in another part of my house. How can I set this up? I was wondering if they will all be on the name network and not create an additional wireless network also.

Thanks in advance. Message 1 of 7. Labels: Installation Troubleshooting.

Re: Netgear N as a repeater? To clarify I have the Netgear N in my basement. I have an Ethernet line already running downstairs from my Time Capsule so I need help with what settings to configure on the router itself and if I would need to configure anything on the main router as well.

How to Turn an Old Router into a Wi-Fi Extender

Top Contributors. User Count. See All. Discussion stats.Unless you live in a tiny apartment or bungalow, it's rare that a single router can cover an entire home.

Rather than complaining to your mate about places you can't listen to Spotify or watch YouTube videos, you can do something about it: turn an old router into an extender that grabs the Wi-Fi data signal out of thin air and retransmits it. It's easy to reconfigure an old router into an extender so that the device grabs a strong Wi-Fi signal and sends out a fresh stream of data to previously unconnected areas. While it costs next to nothing to do this, don't expect Wi-Fi miracles.

Still, it's a good way to inexpensively fill your home with wireless data. We transformed a dusty Netgear R Using Netgear Genie, a free network-management app for Netgear routers, we easily converted the old router into a Wi-Fi extender to add Wi-Fi to a guest room in my basement.

The general process for other routers is similar but not exactly the same. If you have an old router sitting around, check with the manual to make sure the device can be converted into an extender or a repeater, and get specific instructions.

If the router doesn't support running as a repeater or an extender using the manufacturer's firmware, there's another way. If so, chances are that you can indeed use your old router as an extender.

Be careful with routers from the Do the math: If you have a Mbps connection and the extender is limited to a peak of 11 or 54 Mbps, you'll likely be wasting most of your bandwidth with an older router.

There are 17 Asus routers that support the AiMesh tool and can automatically create a mesh network topology to fill a home with wireless data. You will need to load new firmware to make it work, though. After getting and installing the R's latest firmware and connecting the router to our network with a Cat5 jumper cable, we opened a browser window and typed, "www.

Other router makes will have different addresses or will have actual IP addresses, like See the chart below to find out the details for your brand of router. If these default passwords don't work, you can generally find the correct ones through the manufacturer's product-support pages or on sites like RouterPasswords.

Needless to say, you should change your password as soon as you can to something more secure and we have a handy guide that walks you through the process. If you've set a new password for the router and since forgotten it, go right ahead and perform a hard restart that will wipe all existing data from the system. You typically do this by holding the reset button down for 20 or 30 seconds and then the router will restart.

I'd like to use my N as an access point in the cottage behind the house. Can I wirelessly connect my N to the router inside the house and use it to get wifi secure coverage in the cottage? N is not a router model, it's a marketing tool. The Model is on a label on the router. Once you locate it you can find a manual via the download link at top of this page.

I don't have the router with me at the moment, but Amazon tells me it is a C model. Use the dowload tab above and locate the manual for any netgear product you're considering. If you need a extender then purchase one. The house I'm moving into already has a wifi router set up, but it doesn't have enough range on its own. It's a cable modem router combo and it is sophisticated in that is has a router and modem together in one box.

But that in no way is what you need. Subscribe for Updates. Join Now Log In Help. All forum topics Previous Topic Next Topic. Message 1 of 6. Labels: Troubleshooting. Not applicable. Dec 13, 1 0 10, 0. It does not have good signal for the upstairs, except in the room directly above the router. Unfortunately, my knowledge with this goes as far as using one router. So I need help figuring out how to get my Netgear Router to be in listening mode to bounce the signal from the Xfinity router to the upstairs.

Please help! RealBeast Titan Moderator. Sep 13, 16, 85, 3, You will get far better results if you can run a cable up to the N and run it in AP mode. If that is impossible, you can use a pair of powerline adapters to get the signal to the N and still run in AP mode. Recall that you will also have to set the N static address in the Xfinity static table, which will require the MAC address of the N it is on a sticker on the back or bottom. What makes a good purchase?

Please fill your email! We have a warehouse here with several SonicPoints scattered throughout. One worker has been complaining about the signal strength in his office due to his location so he asked us if we can set up wifi for him that just connects his office.

I was going through our storage and saw that we have an unused Netgear N and a Netgear N I wanted know if there is anyway to set up one of these as a wireless client. I want the Netgear to act as an access point wireless repeater to multiple devices in his office to connect to the network and I want to wirelessly connect the Netgear to a SonicPoint but I don't want to bridge it to the SonicPoint because that would cause the SonicPoint to stop acting as an access point unless I am misunderstanding something about bridges.

In other words, I do want to bridge these devices but I want each of them to stay as an access point. Does the N not have AP mode in the settings? Listed as AP mode. Checked it and as I recall there was a 'static' mode listed as not recommended but that just required you to put in the static IP settings for the network it was connecting to, which is what I did. Plugged it into my network using it's WAN port and it started working right away.

Maybe I'm not understanding the real issue. If you are just trying to get a better wifi signal in his office, do you have a spare network cable drop so as to use the N as an AP just like you do with your SonicPoints?

Or if he only has a single network drop, put a switch in his office to service the AP along with his PC. Or is his whole office all wifi? Is that why you are talking about bridging them? You need to change router's mode from AP to wireless repeater one.

Works better than original firmware. Once correctly set you can forget about it. I am reading the question and the first answer again. And they are both kind of very confusing in the respect that are putting together technical terms, which don't match.

You can connect the repeater to your existing network using network cable or using wireless. In the latter case the repeater receives wifi signal from an existing AP, amplifies it and re-transmit it. The repeater wifi settings in both former and latter case must be identical to the AP that is: SSID, password, encryption.Thank you for taking the time to respond.
